You are known by the Company You Keep and the Shirts You Wear

Those of you who are closest to me know how I loathe those supposed-to-be-sayings on T-shirts. So, it came back to me today as I read an article of a father who tragically left his children to die in -50 degree weather in Saskatchewan. It is a heartbreaking story and the father is said to be ``a doting father`` who feels ``tremendous guilt``. He made a mistake, clouded by alcohol and frostbite and hypothermia.

Okay, so why is he wearing this shirt when he is living through the biggest tragedy of his life? There is a reason why attorneys pick out the clothes of the defendants. I mean, what is this shirt saying to you? How in the world can we take his pain seriously if he throws on the first thing that is handy in his closet -- which is the only way I can explain wearing this shirt!

My mother always said -- we are known by the company we keep and the clothes we wear. How very true.
